Toothaches seem to come from nowhere and can be particularly painful. However, toothaches can be indicative of a couple different situations, each of which will benefit from seeking treatment as soon as possible. By scheduling an appointment with Vela Loftin Dental Center, you can have your teeth examined to determine the cause of your toothache.
Advanced Tooth Decay
Does your tooth hurt all the time? Does it instead hurt when you bite down on food?
If a toothache happens in these situations, it is likely caused by advanced tooth decay. As a cavity forms on the tooth and eats through the enamel, the decay may reach the pulp of the tooth; the pulp is the innermost substance of a tooth, where blood vessels and nerves reside. As the pulp becomes infected and begins to decay, the nerves react to both the decay and the pressure placed onto the now-weakened tooth. As such, pain can be felt in the tooth either when biting and chewing or at all times.
If advanced decay is the source of your oral pain, it can be resolved with root canal therapy. This procedure removes the decaying pulp and cavity surrounding it, then restructure the tooth with a biocompatible sealant and a crown. Removing and restoring the decayed parts of a tooth free you of the discomfort coming from a decayed tooth.
In cases which you may be experiencing a toothache only when you eat and drink something hot or cold, it is possible that you are experiencing gum disease.
Periodontitis, the advanced form of gum disease, is specifically responsible for causing the gums to recede. As gum recession occurs, the roots—which are particularly sensitive to changes in temperature—become exposed. As such, if you drink something hotter or colder than room temperature, the exposed roots react by triggering a sensation of pain.
Gum disease is all too common in the United States. By coming in for your regular dental appointments, you can help prevent periodontitis. However, if gum disease has begun to expose the roots, a periodontal deep cleaning and other restorative measures may be necessary in order to halt and reverse the effects of gum disease.
It is also possible that your toothache began right after some facial injury, such as when playing sports. If that is the case, please call Vela Loftin Dental Center right away. Cracks and chips can occur during these instances, and such damage to the tooth leads to tooth decay or tooth loss. By scheduling an emergency appointment to treat such conditions, our dentists might be able to restore the tooth and save it from decay or extraction.
